factive verbs and protagonist projection

چکیده
Nearly all philosophers agree that only true things can be known. But does this principle reect actual patterns of ordinary usage? Several examples in ordinary language seem to show that ‘know’ is literally used non-factively. By contrast, this paper reports ve experiments utilizing explicit paraphrasing tasks, which suggest that these non-factive uses are actually not literal. Instead, they are better explained by a phenomenon known as protagonist projection. It is argued that armchair philosophical orthodoxy regarding the truth requirement for knowledge withstands current empirical scrutiny.

The Cloud of Knowing: Non-factive al-ta 'know' (as a Neg-raiser) in Korean
We distinguished the two different uses of factive and NonFactive (NF) in the verb al-ta ‘know’ in Korean and the distinction is crucially made by the different complement cases of factive –ul ACC and NF –uro Directional (oblique). The NF use is possible with nonveridical/negative contexts in English and other languages but it is possible with a positive sentence with the Directional case in Ko...
متن کاملQuestion-Embedding and Factivity
Attitude verbs fall in different categories depending on the kind of complements which they can embed. In English, a verb like know takes both declarative and interrogative complements. By contrast, believe takes only declarative complements and wonder takes only interrogative complements. The present paper examines the hypothesis, originally put forward by Hintikka 1975, that the only verbs th...
متن کاملTowards an Inferential Lexicon of Event Selecting Predicates for French
We present a manually constructed seed lexicon encoding the inferential profiles of French event selecting predicates across different uses. The inferential profile (Karttunen, 1971a) of a verb is designed to capture the inferences triggered by the use of this verb in context. It reflects the influence of the clause-embedding verb on the factuality of the event described by the embedded clause....
متن کاملThe Accommodation Potential of Implicative Verbs
We present an analysis of implicative verbs, complementtaking verbs which induce entailment-like inferences, but which are also claimed to trigger presuppositions. What is presupposed, however, is much more variable than with e.g. factive verbs. Sketching a formal treatment in Logical Description Grammar we consider the role of pragmatic reasoning and accommodation in deriving these presupposit...
